Earlier Gulmarg was named as Gaurimarg. The name was based on the name of Goddess Parvati, the wife of Lord Shiva. Yousuf Shah Chak changed the name of this place to Gulmarg.
In the early years of 20th century, the central Asian Explorer Sir Marc Aurel Stein made his home in Gulmarg.

Baba Reshi Shrine
Gulmarg is also home to a shrine of Baba Reshi, who was the saint of Muslims here. The shrine was built in 1480. This shrine is 5 centuries old and it was constructed with the architectural styles of Persian and Mughals.
St Mary's Church
